MERKY ACE - PEAK LEVELS EP REVIEW

By Asma Qureshi

Three is the magic number when it comes to this EP, “Peak Levels” where Lewisham born MC, Merky Ace keeps it short and sweet.

Heavy instrumental, epileptic hi hats and Merky Ace is in devilish mode. This guy is fluent in Grime and perhaps that’s why you see Dizzee lurking in the visuals to this track. “Cuss Match” delivers a collection of Merky Ace spitting in one breath, trigger fingers and faces of disgust.

“No Sky” is the jalapenos in this rap, as this MC lets you know he’s not someone to sleep on. The beat is a consistent progression of typical chops and deafening filters, while Merky Ace is warning everyone to behave and tread carefully. His lyrical approach shows a level of confidence in himself as well as his music.

But it’s the last track “Last Night Vibes” which reveals Merky’s ability to harness his sound alongside TKO and Cadell, two artists who both contribute their unique perspective, as TKO shows up alongside peng ones, while Cadell revels in his money ventures. Full of blams, this track is far from a chill vibe, something which you might expect from its title. Nah, this EP is here to wake mo**** f*****s up.

However, it’s Merky Ace’s visuals and live performances which bring out the best in him as an artist, especially after mastering the orchestral “Woo Riddim” which was an exceptional example of how the lid on “Grime” has been taken off and can now be translated in alternative ways aside from just getting in the booth. Merky Ace’d that.
